Understanding Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
ABA is an evidence-based therapy that helps children with autism build meaningful skills and reduce barriers to learning. Here is how our BCBAs put the science into everyday practice.
The Science Behind ABA
ABA studies how behaviour is shaped by the environment, then uses that understanding to teach new skills in a positive, dignified way.
Antecedent – Behaviour – Consequence (ABC)
Your BCBA looks at what happens before a behaviour, the behaviour itself, and what follows, then adjusts the environment to encourage helpful skills.
Example in a Toronto home
A child points at a cup (antecedent), says "water" (behaviour), and receives the drink (consequence), reinforcing functional communication.
Positive Reinforcement
Desired behaviours are followed by motivating, meaningful rewards so they become stronger and more consistent over time.
